When Men Talk To Me Like Shit

Being a 31 year old man, serving tables can be somewhat of a test when it comes to composure, humility and patience. What really helps me deal with stuck-up customers, who think they’re better than me, is the confidence in knowing they don’t know a damn thing about me. I got this part time gig to improve my life. My days usually go like this:

  • Work on my at-home web development and marketing business.
  • Workout at the gym.
  • Work 4 hours at a restaurant.
  • Free Time.

Do I want to or feel like I have to explain this to every asshole I wait on…….nope. So, I just take a deep breath, smile, and let people act like jerks. A fine example of this would be this older guy I waited on yesterday.

This guy was a heavy-set, 50 (or so) year old man. He was very aggressive from start to finish. Everything he asked for was in a tone that said “I’m intimidated by you but I realize you’re stuck at work, and I need to look cool in front of my company, so I’ll exploit your position by talking to you like a slave.” Fine by me. You’re not going to rattle me one bit. We both know you wouldn’t have the nerve to talk to me like that outside of this restaurant. It’s okay.

Is there any way we can list the names of these demeaning people who talk to us like we’re of a lower cast system? It’s wrong and it’s unhealthy. I wish there was a way to put this behavior in check. Last night Karina came in and decided she did not like me for some reason neither my manager or I could understand. She threatened she would never return but continued to stay and try to pick up rich old men. I continued to smile and be ladylike. What’s funny is that the guy she was talking to complained about her being draining after she left. It pissed me off that she wanted to put my job on the line to make her self feel important.

I can relate to this from a female perspective, too. I have very blonde hair (yes it’s naturally that way, mostly blonde with gray mixed in), and I’m not trying to sound conceited or vain when I say this, but I can usually get a guy’s attention pretty quick because my hair is an attention getter. When waiting on a couple, I really try hard to cater to the man’s female companion for fear that I’m being noticed too much by her date. However, if I’m waiting on a group of females, forget it, in which case a cockroach is treated better than me. I’m apparently a threat to females because these “chick clicks” will talk to me like I’m their servant just because I’m waiting on them and they can’t be bothered to be civil as they’re boozing it up with fruity drinks since they can’t handle the hard stuff. Note to self absorbed so-called pretty girls who make it a point to treat (female) servers like dirt: acting like a self important diva doesn’t make you a lady.
